Harbor Breeze Cruises in Long Beach

Harbor Breeze Cruise Long Beach: Exploring the port and beyond

Want a fun way to relax with the family and get some fresh air? Look no further than Long Beach and to Harbor Breeze Cruise offering several different options to get up close and personal with the waters around the harbor and beyond! We took their Urban Ocean Harbor tour recently. Not only was it a relaxing trip, we saw several ocean critters, learned about the port itself and had fun as a family enjoying the perfect weather we love here in California.

The Urban Ocean: Enjoy this World Port and Sea Life Cruise on a double-deck yacht to explore one of the most distinctive sections of the coastline while experiencing the wonders of the Southern California urban ocean. Guided by commentary from an Aquarium educator and an experienced boat captain, you will see massive ships from around the world on their way to the nation's two biggest ports.

Queen Mary and the dome that formally held the Spruce Goose

What to expect: The tour of the harbor includes passing by the Queen Mary and the former home of the Spruce Goose and stays within the harbor following along the rim where you can see all the happenings as containers are off loaded. Pass under several bridges all while taking in the sights of this bustling waterway. Keep your eyes peeled for sea life such as the sea otter, dolphins and sea lions just to name a few (all of which we did see on our trip).

Best viewing: We sat up front on the bow of the boat, it had the most perfect views. There is minimal seating so grab a seat upfront directly after boarding. There is no shaded areas on the bow so bring a hat and dress in cool clothing. Upstairs also offers good viewing but there is a high wall so smaller kids might not be able to see well. The inside seating has a bar for light refreshments and munchies with several tables and chairs along the window viewing areas.

My impression of the tour: This was my first outing within the Long Beach harbor so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. What I found was it had a slow pace that kept within the sea wall making for a smooth, enjoyable ride. The mix of sea life and information on the daily workings of the harbor were very interesting and impressive. This cruise took about 2 hours long to complete it's loop, my girl had no issues with getting bored or fussy, it was an enjoyable excursion.

Whale Watching and Dolphin Tour Join naturalists and experts from the Aquarium of the Pacific for an ocean voyage in search of the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale. This cruise adventure takes you out to the open waters in search of these magnificent but endangered marine mammals while teaching you about conservation of these gentle giants. Along the way there will also be the opportunity to spot dolphins, seals, sea lions, and other marine animals on this three-and-a-half-hour cruise.

This cruise is next on my to do list! Typically June through October  the largest whales and animal in the world, the blue whale, is seen feeding off of the coast of LA on our 3-3.5 hour cruises. November through May, 2 ½ to 3 hour Gray Whale tours observe the annual migration past Southern California's coastline as they travel from Alaska's Bering and Chukchi Seas to Baja, Mexico.

Have you even set out on a whale watching cruise? I for one can't wait to experience it with my family.
