Pageant of the Monsters

Pageant of the Monsters in Laguna Beach

Just when you thought it was safe to go backstage the Festival of Arts delivers a monster of a good time for the Halloween season! If you have ever visited the Festival of Arts in Laguna you know that they put on some pretty amazing shows. But did you know? Every 5 years after their annual Pageant of the Masters event they allow the public to go beyond the stage during the Halloween season for their Pageant of the Monsters. This very limited event only runs for 4 evenings October 26, 27, 28 & 31, 2018. This years theme, Raiders of the lost Art!

Paying homage to a last supper of sorts

Being our first time attending this event, I wasn’t sure just how kid friendly it would be. I was very surprised at all of the crafts and activities there were for the kids to enjoy all with a very kid friendly feel. If you are looking for a different way to spend Halloween night, this might just be the place for you! Check out everything they offer and it’s all included with your entrance.

  • Alien autopsy and demented chef side shows

  • Up close encounters with the Reptile Zoo

  • Face painting and airbrush tattoos

  • Halloween photo-ops and selfie stations

  • Silent horror film movie screenings

  • Music by DJs from KX 93.5, Laguna’s Only FM

  • Create your own mask workshop

  • “Boo Bingo” and build a ghost with Laguna Art-A-Fair

  • Draw Halloween-themed ghouls and Jack O’ Lanterns in oil pastels with Sawdust Art and Craft Festival

  • Tissue paper roses with Laguna Playhouse inspired by the upcoming performance Beauty and the Beast, A Christmas Rose

  • Tile glazing with LOCA Arts Education and Festival of Mosaics for an upcoming permanent public mural in Laguna Beach

  • Plus art displays, music, games, food and more “spook-tacular” activities the whole family can enjoy!

Backstage within the haunted house Raiders of the Lost Art

The gem of this event of course is the “Haunted House” located in the backstage areas and beyond of the theatre. Raiders of the Lost Art invites you to follow the footsteps of legendary archeologist, adventurer and treasure hunter “Cincinnati Smith” on a whimsical and haunted spoof of a popular movie series on his quest to recover the greatest treasures from exotic locales across the globe. He has set his sights on the holy grail, a golden idol, and the arc of the covenant! Trek through the creepy jungle empire of the Amazon to the desert tombs of the Pharaohs. Encounters with cannibals, mummies and yes, slithering reptiles are likely…”Oh NO not SNAKES!”  Yessssssssssss! indeed there will be snakes.

What you need to know before you go:

  • General admission is $20 at the door (pending availability) and $15 in advance. Children 12 and under are $10. Tickets can be bought online, at the Festival’s box office, and by calling 949-497-6582.

  • Costumes may be worn by guests ages 12 and under.

  • Parking across the street or on the street (meters)

  • Event is from 6-9:30pm

Couple of tips on visiting: Get there early to secure parking and tickets if you didn’t purchase them online. Watch the line for the haunted house, it will get longer as the event goes on and can wrap around the entire space so either do that first (starts at 6:15 or do it very last before closing). It does move fairly fast but e all know kids get squeamish in lines.
