Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Turned 50!

Dead men tell no tales! Ye come seekin' adventure with salty old pirates, eh? Sure you've come to the proper place. But keep a weather eye open, mates, and hold on tight. With both hands, if you please. Thar be squalls ahead, and Davy Jones waiting for them what don't obey.

The Bootstrappers are a rowdy bunch, can't you tell? Made my girls day!

Gotta love the pirates ride! Hard to believe that at 50 years old it's still one of the a top draws to the park guests that at times can have wait times well over an hour or more. Check out a short list I compiled of some random facts about the ride and if you weren't able to get your hands on one of the limited edition Annual passholders pin that was released for the ride's anniversary this past weekend, I got one lucky reader covered! Some random facts about the ride you might not have know about: 

  • Opened: March 18, 1967 (okay that was an easy one even with common core math)
  • Duration: 14.5 minutes on a Canal of 1,838 feet long.
  • Capacity: 3,400 people per hour 22 adult passengers per boat.
  • Pirates was the last attraction to have Walt Disney himself personally oversee its construction. Walt Disney passed away in December of 1966 not seeing the completed ride. 
  • There are over 120 Audio-Animatronics on Pirates of the Caribbean ride. This is a mixture of both human and animal animatronics.
  • There is a 2,200-square-foot apartment above Pirates that officially opened in 2008 after being left unfinished after walt Disney's passing in 1967.
  • Construction of the "Dark Ride" cost $8 million when it was originally built in 1967.
  • It was originally envisioned as a walk-through wax museum attraction however, with the success of the boat ride concept of It's a Small World at the 1964 New York World's Fair, Disney decided to employ a similar concept on Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • There are 750,000 gallons of water used for the ride and the first drop is 14 ft high/52 ft long
  • Davy Jones and Blackbeard alternate in the waterfall projection that was added in 2011.
  • Pirates was originally an "E" Ticket ride.
