Holman Ranch Heaven on Earth Carmel Valley
Stay in a Piece of California History at the Holman Ranch
Dating back to the late 1920's, the property located on the Holman Ranch has changed several hands over the years. "Casa Escondida" or the Hidden House was one of the first resorts in Carmel Valley and quickly became a hub for Hollywood elites during the 40's. Stars such as Marlon Brando, Joan Crawford and Charlie Chaplin all frequented this popular destination.
In 2006 it took on a rebirth with the current owners who completely refurbished the property. Now the Ranch is once again a prime destination who is host to private gatherings, weddings and corporate event alike. We were invite to spend a night at the Ranch while on our trip to the Carmel area and it left quite the impression on us.
Arriving to this property was like entering a secluded island. So peaceful and serine, the silence was almost beyond belief! As we entered the gates we had no idea what lied ahead of us as each turn of the road gave nothing up.
When we arrived to our destination we stop directly at the entrances of the amazing guest cabanas. It almost felt like we were in a Fantasy Island episode as each guest slowing arrived one after another with the same look of amazement as they settled into their assigned rooms. We took possession of our room keys at a separate location so there is no check in receptionist, you are given your room key and a map to guide you to the ranch, fun right?
As lovely as the accommodations are nothing beats the natural features of this property, nothing. With the numerous mature oaks, the sprawling vineyards and the picturesque lawn areas, it's all so surreal and so green. The hills and mountains on the property go on for as far as the eyes can see.
The guest rooms are very comfortably appointed and welcoming with the warm color pallet and furnishings that were used. I loved all the tasteful accessories and the blend of the historical features, it by no means feels like a hotel.
The ranch itself is beyond beautiful. The Carmel stone used to construct the ranch has the most perfect shades of creams and golds,it is just stunning against the Terra Cotta roof tiles (most are original) The landscaping is so well thought out and for as well manicured as it is, it still feels so naturally layed out. Besides the family room in the "main casa", there is a conference room, a small chapel and private guest quarters.
The ranch is on 400 acres which includes the 10 guest rooms, the main house, a carriage house that was converted into a game room with a full kitchen. The wine making facilities which are built into the side of a hill provide the perfect temperature as well as moisture levels year round. There is a pool with a pool house that holds the gym equipment, stables and equestrian training arena as well.
The wines produced on the ranch include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvgnon Blanc. With the 100 olive trees located within the vineyard, they also produce Extra Virgin Olive Oil, cold pressed and certified organic.
During the day we got a private tour of the property, sampled wines and took advantage of a few of the many hiking trails. For dinner we were all in for a special treat. A private bus awaited us and we soon found ourselves at the Holman Ranch's own restaurant Wills Fargo. The Jarman Wine Tasting Lounge located directly next door graciously greeted us first with more wine sampling before our lovely dinner. We were one of the first to sample their newly reimagined menu and hear about all the changes the restaurant had gone through during it's renovation. (See Wills Fargo story below)
We only spent one night at the ranch, but it definitely left a lasting impression on us, one that will not soon fade. I would put this property at the top of my list if I was in the market for a wedding venue, couples retreat or a special occasion getaway. Only downside, it didn't last longer! I would like to whole heartily thank the Lowder's at Holman Ranch for having us and treating us like family. You have an amazing piece of heaven, thank you for sharing it with us and all who visit.
